Event agenda

NY Cannabis Insider will host it's only cannabis conference of the year, where industry professionals – from growers, processors and retailers to attorneys, consultants, politicians and new/hopeful business owners – will gather for a day of learning and networking. Our events are always evolving and changing based on the needs of the industry.

Our panels will dive deep into various topics and viewpoints from across the industry. There will be time to ask questions and interact with the panelists.

INDUSTRY TOPICS & PANELS WITH LIVE AUDIENCE Q&A:

The state of NY cannabis

High-up officials at the Office of Cannabis Management and the Cannabis Advisory Board (and possibly elected officials) will discuss the current state of affairs when it comes to the implementation of regulatory changes following a staffing and operational shake-up at the OCM, auditing the DASNY fund for CAURD licensees and other issues.

  • Speakers: OCM Chief Administration Officer Sue Filburn, Cannabis Advisory Board Chair Joseph Belluck and more

How would nationwide legalization affect U.S. cannabis cultivation?

The main reason New York’s legal cannabis retailers strictly sell weed grown in New York is that cannabis isn’t federally legal. But once that’s not the case anymore, other countries (which have better growing conditions and cheaper labor) that legalize marijuana may be able to begin shipping to the U.S. at a fraction of the cost to grow here. How much of a danger does that present to U.S. cannabis growers?

Branding via Community

Several cannabis brands in New York are closely associated with specific communities. This panel will discuss the business benefits of honing in on a specific community when marketing your product, the downsides of this approach and the ethics involved when marketing to a specific community (and becoming a quasi-representative of that community).

Innovation vs. Redundancy

As entrepreneurs introduce an increasing number of value-added products to the cannabis market, are all of them an improvement? Sometimes new products are interesting, but don’t serve an existing need, leading to failure. This panel will include entrepreneurs who will talk about what makes a new product innovative, and what makes them redundant.

Headshops: partners, competitors or bad actors?

Headshops have always provided a technically-legal avenue into cannabis culture, while also selling intoxicating products that aren’t technically illegal. Now that cannabis is legal, are these stores providing an important service, or engaging in bad behavior that makes the cannabis industry also look bad?

Playing devil’s advocate: New York’s medical program

Since New York introduced its adult-use program, some people in and around the cannabis industry have questioned whether the medical program is still necessary. In this panel, NY Cannabis Insider senior writer Sean Teehan will pose arguments that suggest the medical program is unnecessary to experts in medical cannabis, and ask them to respond.

Science of weed

Since cannabis became legal (either medical or adult-use) in more states than not, there have been some advancements in weed science. From the use of nanoemulsion technology for fast-acting beverages to research into what elements in cannabis achieve different effects, we are learning more and producing better products because of these advancements. This panel will feature people involved with the science of weed who will talk about what we now know that we didn’t before, what new processing methods are becoming popular on the market and what future advancements we may see in the future.
